Poverty in Spirit
Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.
Indeed, Blessedness has always been the desire of every single person in their lives. It is indeed a highly thought of being rich in all aspects.
But what does this poverty in Spirit to which it has achieved such a Blessing?
…. for theirs is the Kingdom of God?
Many times we just thought of physical poverty, and then we looked at the poor and thinks of ourselves as lucky people who have all the things we need to suit our lives. As we stare at the poor we often think, yeah Blessed are the poor, and then we turn our heads and pass them by. Often we just thought of it as a metaphoric phrase in which they will inherit heaven when they leave earth. In simple words, we think Poor in Spirit are physical poverty and Inheritance of heaven would be when poor people die. Which of course is not the case.
But as we look further into this phrase, the transactions of poverty were not the material posessions. In fact it was indeed the poverty of the inside of a human being. There might be overflowing of material posessions that the hand can touch and feel yet there is no such peace that it can give to suit the needs of having a satisfied life. Still in living with material things, we still didnt find peace at all, in fact we still want more. And the more we crave for things, the more hungry we become. Therefor the poor are blessed because although they lack nothing they are grateful and content.
Is it so that Poverty indeed is the trigger of showing self independence upon things? Which we can rely to feel safe and feel security. And is it not obvious that in Poverty of Spirit we are outwardly rich materially yet so poor in Spirit that even the happiness we desire is just a maskerade display?
Yes the famine of the poor is food, shelter and clothing, and in Spirit but there is also poverty in which the deficiency is spiritual things – poverty in the knowledge of the Torah or Scriptures (instructions), poorness of observance of the commandments and the lack of desire to holiness and righteous life, which is The deep connection to the Creator – God.
Let us look in that passage:
Proverbs 10:21 The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding.
Isaiah 5:13 Therefore My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge; And their honorable men are famished, And their multitude is parched with thirst.
His watchmen are blind, All of them know nothing. All of them are mute dogs unable to bark, Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber; And the dogs are greedy, they are not satisfied And they are shepherds who have no understanding; They have all turned to their own way, Each one to his unjust gain, to the last one.
Then I said, “They are only the poor, They are foolish; For they do not know the way of the LORD Or the ordinance of their God.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Mostly in the passage, it did spoke about physical possesions or something that all mankind are struggling with.. It spoke about the position of each man. As a deep look into the chapters and backgrounds, these passages are referring to the children of God and in which some of them holds a high responsibility in performing the commands of God. The passages spokes about the poorness of character and lack in spiritual growth.

if we think then that poverty holds us vulnerable, it is indeed true. But poverty in Spirit is more visual that it manifests on a persons attitude.
